The Art of Port:
The distinctive microclimate of the Douro Valley and centuries-old winemaking techniques contribute to the excellence of Porto Cruz’s famous Port wines. Fortified and historically sold from the coastal city of Porto, these wines are crafted with meticulous control, blending tradition and modern techniques. The Gran Cruz estates boast some of the region’s oldest port stocks, resulting in unique fortified wines.
Beginning with grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Franca, and Tinta Roriz, grown predominantly across the estate, the winemaking process involves careful harvesting, crushing, destemming, and pressing. Fermentation of the grape or juice is followed by fortification with a spirit (Agurdante) to preserve natural sweetness, giving Port its distinctive character. The wines are then stored in oak barrels, some ageing for a minimum of 3 years and others much longer, enhancing their aromas.
