Introduction
In this article, we will explore a delightful journey to uncover the fascinating history, meticulous craftsmanship making it one of the best brandies you can put your hand on without thinking. Macieira Brandy embodies the true essence of Portugal’s winemaking heritage & a legacy that spans over a century.
The History
The story of Macieira Brandy goes back to the year 1865 when José Guilherme Macieira, a visionary winemaker, founded the Macieira wine and spirits’ company. However, Macieira Brandy was the work of his son Jose Maria, who had studied enology in France and worked in the vineyards at Cognac. He had the vision to make a Cognac in Portugal and it was a great success.
In the early 20th century, it won some international accolades and became a global success. In 2000, Macieira was bought by the global giant the Pernod Ricard group from Seagram’s which had initially purchased this in 1977 and is still directly sold in over 40 counties.
Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC)
Like Cognac and Armagnac regions of France, Lourinha in Portugal is also DOC designated brandy-production region of the world. The brandy is crafted using only the finest Portuguese grape varieties, including Uva Fernão Pires and Uva Arinto. These grapes are meticulously harvested and fermented to create a base wine that forms the core of Macieira’s exceptional brandies.
After fermentation, the wine undergoes double distillation in traditional copper pot stills, a process that extracts the purest essence of the grapes. The brandy is then aged in French oak barrels, where it matures gracefully for several years. This aging process imbues Macieira Brandy with its signature character – a harmonious balance of fruity and woody notes, with hints of vanilla, spice, and a subtle sweetness.
Comforting warm flavours
Macieira Brandy offers a comforting symphony of flavours that just gracefully dance on the palate. When you sip it reveals a burst of ripe fruit flavours of vanilla, apricot and peach. As the brandy lingers on the tongue, the influence of oak becomes apparent, imparting a velvety texture and a de-lightful complexity of a chestnut flavour.
The brandy’s finish is smooth and warming, leaving a lasting impression that beckons you to take another sip. Whether enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or as a base for exquisite cocktails, Macieira Brandy is a versatile spirit that can elevate any drinking experience.
Conclusion
Macieira Brandy continues to enchant both traditionalists and contemporary drinkers alike with its meticulous craftsmanship, exceptional warm fruity flavours and smooth rounded after note.
