The Story of Old Monk Rum
The Story of the 2nd most popular rum (by volumes) – Old Monk Rum is as interesting at its taste. This popular spirit comes from the Mohan Meakin Limited stable registered in Solan, Himachal Pradesh (India) – Solan – Himachal Tourism Official Website
In 1855 a Scottish businessman Edward Abraham Dyer started a brewery in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh during the ‘Raj’. To this day its still in operation but as an advanced distillery site in the current avatar. It later changed ownership and name as Dyer Meakin Breweries Limited as it was later purchased by an English businessman H.G. Meakin believed to come from a family of brewers in Burton-on-Trent.
The company once again changed hands and post India’ independence -1949 was bought by Narendra Nath Mohan and renamed initially as Mohan Meakin Breweries Limited and then to present name Mohan Meakin Limited – Mohanmeakin – Mohan Meakin Group
But the companies true fortune and fame changed by his son Rattan Mohan, a retired Indian army colonel who took over the company as its managing director after his father’s death in 1969.
Old Monk Rum – is a tribute to them and was initially launched in 1935. The perennially popular ‘Old Rum XXX Rum’ is matured in old oakwood casks, which impart the characteristics of well-rounded and sweet aroma. It has a smooth creamy consistency. With notes of caramel and chocolate with a hint of vanilla flavour creating a truly pleasant harmony.
